In particular Pink Floyd fans have sometimes been dismissive of the remasters and claim the original pressings were far superior, so I thought I would put this to the test for myself. A local record store had the old original pressing from 1973 in what looked like close to mint condition, at least the vinyl is, the cover... not so much. I subsequently also ordered the 2016 remastered copy from an online retailer for four times the price.

I then spent a happy afternoon playing first one and then the other in an attempt to get as good a listening comparison as I could possibly muster. All listenings were via My Rega Planar 3 fitted with a new Rega Elys 2 cartridge, Rega Elicit amp and Snell Elll speakers.

First off, the remaster is of course unplayed virgin vinyl and as such has almost zero surface noise compared to the 1973 version which has minimal noise but it is still there. This isn't actually a problem of any kind but just worth mentioning anyway, and it certainly doesn't distract from the listening experience of the original pressing which is in NM+ condition.

The actual pressings are almost identical in sound quality however, with perhaps only the bass on the 2016 remaster being a little fuller and better controlled. On a lesser system I doubt very much if one would hear any difference at all. I'm actually surprised by how similar they are and almost disappointed having nothing much to report...

I suspect the whole "remastered from original recordings" hype is just another marketing ploy to milk us vinyl lovers of our money. To be fair they are milking the cd market too. Oh well.

Which brings me to a question, is it really worth paying a handsome premium for the newer album when the originals are still in plentiful supply at very reasonable prices. My conclusion is, no. If you can get an older copy in good condition, go for it because the newer version probably won't give you anything better and you could buy three other LP's for the balance of your hard earned cash. For avid Pink Floyd fans it may be worth it just to complete "the collection" as it were.

It had been an aim of mine for some years now to build myself a bar at home for entertaining friends regularly, but somehow time and inspiration just simply did not allow for it. However several weeks ago I decided to stop procrastinating and just get down to it. The bar in the photo above is the final result and below I will explain how I got there.

Being the sort of person I am I wanted to plan it down 100% before I started so that I would know exactly what to buy, how much and what the entire procedure would be to build it myself. Call me picky but I like stuff to be done right... ;-)

I started by researching the price of wood and other materials and quickly realised that this would be quite a pricey and challenging enterprise. After a few days of searching, making sums and searching again I decided to check what a bar from IKEA would cost. I discovered that Ikea do not actually make a bar for home use for some reason, possibly not politically correct? Whatever their reason, big mistake!

But while browsing their website I realised that they make furniture a lot cheaper than I could when paying retail prices for materials, and then I got a brainwave! What if I purchased as much of the structure from IKEA as I could and then simply finish the bar off with some nominal purchases at the local hardware store? After doing some more sums, looking at more bits and pieces, doing some more sums and more looking and measuring, I came to the conclusion that it would not only be within budget but it would be much faster to construct and would probably look a whole lot better than the results my own meager carpentry skills would deliver.

This is the corner in our apartment that the wife and I had earmarked for the bar.

It was a dull and uninspiring corner that always seemed underutilized no matter what we did with it... but that was about to change. Big time!

First step was to order everything from IKEA online, and I then also opted for their home delivery to spare myself the trouble. A couple of weeks later everything arrived and the next day, a Saturday, I started the build.

First I assembled the "Billy" bookshelves:

Ikea have made this super easy and only moderate skills are needed to get them up in no time. I used different components of the Billy bookshelves to fit the space perfectly and to get the shelves looking how I imagined a bar should look, this includes the glass shelves for the top half of the units while retaining the wooden shelves at the bottom. I securely screwed the individual units together to each other and also fixed them securely to the back wall with a bracket that was supplied in the box. Better safe than sorry!

In the pic below you can see a shorter variety of the Billy bookshelves
that form the basic frame beneath the walnut kitchen counter that I also
ordered from IKEA. Of course this is not very sturdy so it was time to
move on to the more challenging part of the build.

I then purchased some 45mm x 75mm wooden beams at the local hardware store, which happened to be a branch of Jem & Fix. I also had to get some screws because I was almost out. Then I measured, cut and fixed the beams directly to the bookshelves and also included a built in foot rest.

Next I started cladding the entire structure in some beautiful
floorboards also from jem & Fix. This went quite speedily and just
required some sawing and nailing. The boards clip together very neatly
and look beautiful once joined.

As you can see I couldn't wait and had already started stocking the
shelves. Big mistake as everything ended up covered in dust and had to
be washed... oh well, we live and learn. The pic below shows the bar with the floorboard
cladding completed.

Next I attached an aluminium stair rail to the footrest to ensure longer wear and give the bar a better finish.

The last major step was to suspend the large bamboo lampshades I had also purchased from IKEA from the ceiling directly above the bar counter. This proved to be the most challenging to do as the ceiling is very (very) hard concrete and drilling a straight hole was next to impossible... but after much sweat and cussing it finally got done.

Getting it this far took two weekends working about 6 hours per day, now the only thing left to do are finishings to corners and some other small bits and pieces which I will get to next weekend. B^) (...and then get some bar stools from IKEA)

All in all I am very happy with the final result and look forward to many evenings of pub fun at home with my buddies while listening to some quality music! Below are a few more views of the bar so you can get a better idea of the "feel".

Released in 1980 on the DECCA record label this was truly Pavarotti's greatest hits, showcasing the tenor maestro at his finest and doing what he did best.

I picked up this copy over the weekend from the Red Cross charity shop in Landskrona Sweden for the paltry sum of 10kr. They don't have a large selection of vinyl there, but I happen to know they have some great classical records in very good condition at the moment (including some more Pavarotti), but you will have to get there soon because I have them in my sights! ;-)

The album was released in June of 1980 in the USA, and in May of 1982 in the UK. That is a very long wait between the two and it would be interesting to hear the reason why. Alas, I haven't been able to find out...
Handful Of Keys by Thomas "Fats" Waller was released under the RCA Victor label and features a
compilation of the wonderful jazz sounds of Fats Waller & His Rhythm.

The album is a bit of a mystery to me however as there is another album using the exact same name but with a very different track listing that was released in 1929 under the same record label.

The copy I have seems to have been released in either 1953 or 1957 (or possibly even 1969 according to another on-line source...), quite some years after Fats Waller's untimely passing. A note on the back of the cover says it was compiled by John R.T. Davies, revised by R.M. Cooke and published by "Friends of Fats" the Thomas "Fats" Waller Appreciation Society London, September 1953, but further down it says it's © by Radio Corporation of America, 1957.

My copy was made in Germany by Telefunken Decca and the vinyl is HEAVY.

The tragic life of Billie Holiday is the stuff of jazz legend and this tragedy is accentuated through this album, her final recording before she died four months later at the age of 44. After her death the album was renamed "Last Recording", but was otherwise the exact same album.

Billie's voice on this record adds to the sense of finality with her sounding frail and weak through most of the album, and yet it is pure Billie Holiday and full of the soul and passion she always infused into her music. For me this album completes the collection of Billie Holiday LP's that I have and it simply wouldn't be the same without this addition.

While my copy's cover is very yellowed with age the vinyl inside is near mint without a single crackle or scratch and makes for very poignant listening.

The front cover has a mood filled portrait of Billie Holiday while the back has a short history of Billie and includes a short run through the songs on the album.

This Lead Belly compilation album was released in Denmark in 1963 and was number 12 in the Storyville Blues Anthology. It is titled Lead Belly 2, and of course that means that there was a previous Lead Belly release in the same series, it was number 7 and I hope to find a copy of it some day.

I am a Lead Belly (and old time blues) fan so when I found this copy I was very thrilled, and the music certainly doesn't disappoint and contains some of his best recordings faithfully reproduced. I am a happy vinyl fan right now!

On the back is a short history of Lead Belly's rather colourful life as well as a critique of his songs from this album.

My copy is in G+ condition but faithfully retains the sound of the original recordings which were made between 1939 and 1946. I think that keeps it faithful to the sound of the 30's and 40's rather than the "remastered" copies of these old recordings that people release on CD these days and which sound sterile and soulless. At least to me.

Erroll Garner was distinctive in the jazz world as being entirely unable to read music, and everything he played was from memory. Despite this he was called "one of the most distinctive of all pianists" and a "brilliant virtuoso" by Scott Yanow of Allmusic. He also was also, apparently, Johnny Carson's favourite jazz musician and appeared on the Johnny Carson show several times.

This particular album, "Erroll Garner plays all-time hits" was his 33rd album and has a wonderful collection of hits from the era reinterpreted and delivered in true Errol Garner jazz piano style. It was released in 1965.
Despite the very flashy yellow, red and black front cover the rear of the cover is a very dull black and white and only contains advertising for other albums under the "Famous Artists Series" and the assurance that "Fine records need not be expensive".
If you can find a copy, this album is a real gem and is certainly worth having in your collection. Just a hint, there are several available for cheap from Discogs. I am not sponsored by Discogs in any way, I just like to help my favourite readers* towards a bargain. You know who you are!

As far as I can see this album was not a worldwide release and was only manufactured under licence in the Netherlands and Germany. It was released in 1974 and essentially was a Neil Diamond compilation album.

My copy was manufactured in Western Germany by TELDEC (Telefunken-Decca).

The only info I could get about it was from Discogs, and they don't give any more info than I can get off the album cover... except that it was also made in the Netherlands.

Diamonds contains almost all Neil Diamond originals except for two songs, He Ain't Heavy... He's My Brother which was written by Bob Russell and Bobby Scott, and Mr. Bojangles which was written by Jerry Jeff Walker.

Neil Diamond being the flashy showman that he was back then has a flashy showman cover photo and around the back there is a close-up portrait of him doing what he does best.

Being a double album it has an opening gatefold cover, but as you can see in the photograph below it is unusual in that it features a large fold out poster reproduction of the same photo that is on the front cover. While it can't be removed from the cover I am sure every Neil Diamond fan loved it!
